Dead Ahead is a new zombie game with a refreshing take on the popular “endless running” genre, putting you in a post apocalyptic zombie wasteland where you need to scoot and shoot for your survival. The gameplay is highly addictive and will see you giving it “just one more go” one too many times.

Ride of your life

The world has been overrun by zombies and it’s up to you to ride for your life. Armed with only with a small pistol and a small motorised scooter you will need to run over zombies, jump obstacle and shoot your way through the hordes of zombies to unlock upgrades and bonuses.

Controls

The controls initially feel slightly awkward until you get into the groove of guiding your bike, accelerating and shooting behind you. Crashing into zombies and killing them can slow you down, which is the worst thing that can happen, so you’ll need to be quick on the gas to get some distance in front again. Guiding the pursing zombies into stationary objects will decapitate them allowing you to save on valuable ammunition and the dreaded slow reload.

The shooting and driving combination will keep you on edge as you try to look ahead for weapon upgrades and avoiding obstacles while also trying to shoot behind you at the attacking zombies. The suspense of waiting for your gun to reload and the amount of bullets you have to put into some of the monster zombies will have you on the edge of your seat, and at times, your own death will come as bit of relief so you can regroup, regrip and start again.

Tip: you can switch which side the controls are on if you’re a lefty (left handed, not politically left) by swiping the controls from one side to the other.

Cost of play

The game is free to play and uses in-app purchases if you want to quickly scale up your weapons and ride. The push to pay to upgrade appears almost from the outset which is a shame because it’d be nice to get a feel and rhythm of the gameplay before being super sized. In app advertising can also become a little intrusive, though it’s to be expected from a free to play game.

The games description provides the following features:

  • An action-packed endless zombie runner
  • Quirky sense of humour and pixel-inspired visuals
  • Pimp your ride and upgrade your weapons
  • Complete missions to rank up and earn greater rewards
  • Customise and share your own progress banner
  • UNIVERSAL; plays great on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad

Conclusion

Dead Ahead is an original take on the “endless runner” genre and looks gorgeous on the iPhone and iPads we tested the game on.Make no mistake – Dead Ahead is a wickedly fun game that will keep you coming back for more.

Kain's quest in life is to find a mobile game experience that is as captivating as a console game. He also knows how to party.

Thanks Mr. Kain, I enjoyed that review.

I had to award Dead Ahead three stars. I liked the concept and gruesome humour, but found it really uncomfortable to play.

My eyes did this ( .)(. )* as I played – it all moved soo fast!

Nice review KT and totally agree. Very addictive and love the power up options, challenges and overall design. The zombies have a good feed on you when you die as well

      Zombienomnomnom…

I particularly like it when you hit a vehicle and your decapitated head rolls on down the road.
